Things To Do And Places To Go

 

You can just chill out and relax on site at Island Lodge or visit the many villages, beaches and attractions of the area. Here are a few suggestions to start you off. Also take a look at our useful links on the left for even more information on the area.

 

Kingsbridge

Often referred to by the locals as the capital of the South Hams. The main centre provides for most needs with good parking, shops, restaurants and markets.

Salcombe

If you are interested in the sea, sailing, boating fishing or water sport then take a trip to Salcombe. In this area of outstanding natural beauty you will also find many places to eat out ( plenty of locally caught fish on the menu ) and an assortment of shops and pubs

Dartmouth

A must to visit when you are in the area, with river trips available, and many historic feature of the area to visit. Couple this with the stunning scenery of the steep hills dotted with buildings overlooking the sailboats and ferries moving across the river. A steam railway runs from Kingswear (short ferry crossing from Dartmouth) to Paignton well worth a visit.

Totnes

A Devon town with a bustling main street, castle and market, positioned in a valley with the river Dart running through it . Well worth a visit.

 

Beaches in the area

The stunning coastline of the South Hams offers many beaches in easy reach of Island Lodge. Here are just a few.

Bantham (sandy)

Ideal for surfing, a fine sandy beach with sand dunes. One of the top beaches in the South West with a blue flag award. Dogs are only allowed on part of this beach, toilets available.

Beesands (shingle)

Nice beach with parking and a nearby pub

Blackpool Sands (coarse sand)

No dogs allowed on this beach, but good parking, toilets, shop and cafe on site make this a favourite with holidaymakers.

Hope Cove  (sandy)

A sandy beach with parking and shops in the area

Salcombe  (sandy)

A favourite with many visitors with shops, toilets and plenty to see in the surrounding area of Salcombe.

Slapton Sands (shingle)

Stretching from Torcross to Strete gate this stunning shore line runs parallel with the coast road for a considerable distance, making access easy at Torcross, Slapton and Strete Gate where good parking and toilet facilities are available.

Thurlestone Sands and South Milton Sands

There are two beaches at Thurlestone - Thurlestone Sands and South Milton Sands both have a fine, shingle sand and sheltered waters. There are numerous car parks in the area. South Milton has toilets and a cafe  Dogs are permitted on this beach.
